Acupuncture Helps Reduce Sleep Disturbances in Women

A study published recently in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology touted the benefits of acupuncture for sleep disturbances in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. These disturbances often happen due to changes in hormone levels, and Raby Institute providers have seen evidence for years that acupuncture can help.

However, only recently has a major medical journal published on this finding, and it was no small study. The researchers involved analyzed 34 different trials that looked at sleep disturbances in this specific group of women.

"We've been recommending acupuncture for a long time, but to have it published in this premier western journal is wonderful. It takes a lot to be accepted into a peer-reviewed journal," says Integrative Gynecologist Katherine Thurer, MD, FACOG

For the group of women either about to go through, going through, or already through menopause, sleep is vital.

"A lack of sleep makes everything worse. It's associated with obesity and high blood pressure. And if you think about it, interrogators use sleep deprivation to torture people," Dr. Thurer says. "Not only does it make your mood worse, but your ability to think and make critical decisions."
