Detox and Fall Cleansing: Time to Energize You & Your Immune System!

(September 2010)

Girl with Apple_Detox and Fall CleaningAs the last days of Indian Summer fade, fall is upon us. This means it's time to atone for the "unhealthy sins of summer," including cookouts, graduation parties, margaritas, brats and beer.

For many, September means getting back into the full swing of work, school, volunteer work or any combination of the above which demands all the energy our bodies can muster. As the season begins to change, it's the perfect time to detox.

Who Benefits
Could you benefit from detox? There's no easy answer, because toxicity doesn't manifest itself the same way for all people. To sort out who does and doesn't need a detox, sometimes I will use a "Detoxification Questionnaire" to help my patients rate the frequency and severity of about 70 symptoms. How to Detox
Detoxification programs are usually done in stages. We start with a "modified elimination diet" which eliminates sugar, caffeine, alcohol, saturated fats, dairy products, red meat, foods containing gluten and other "trigger" foods that often stress the digestive system or the liver. At the same time, patients ramp-up on specific supplements that provide nutrients specific to liver function and cellular detoxification.

Popular methods for detoxifying are a fresh juice, "Lemonade" or water fast - but for other than spiritual practices they are not recommended and can actually cause greater damage than being toxic will. The body needs protein, carbohydrates and fats, as well as vitamins and minerals, to supply the liver with the energy it needs to do its work. Without enough fuel, the liver slows down and becomes inefficient. That's why a good quality protein powder like Xymogen's OptiCleanse is a perfect protein source. It contains a hypoallergenic rice protein base with nutrients designed to support Phase I/Phase II liver detoxification.

Additionally, it's even more important during a detox to include foods or supplements that contain high levels of antioxidants, whose role is to scavenge free radicals and keep them from damaging healthy cells. The detox process produces loads of free radicals, so adding the superfood drink Oki® makes the job easier. Oki (pronounced oak-eye) makes use of a little known violet-black nutrient-packed berry that is native to North America - the aronia berry. Aronia is blended in a base of organic aloe vera with other superfood nutrients like noni, acai, mangosteen and pomegranate juices. It also contains d-ribose - an important ingredient for cellular energy production. Oki also has been reported to support healthy blood sugar, improve mental function, enhance immunity and more.

Finally, the last tool in the detox box is Orenda Immune. Detoxing at the organ level is great, but detoxifying at the cellular level is the best way to enhance the immune system. Immune synergistically combines three key ingredients to bring out the most potent aspects of their immune enhancement properties. This formula is one of the most important ways to build and support the immune system.

Should You Detox?
Without properly detoxifying your body now and taking out the toxic trash that has taken up residence this summer you could be in for a long, low energy and sickly winter. Now is the time to detoxify and provide your body with enough high quality protein, nutrients and liquids to energize. Doing a proper detox will give you a healthy edge as we hunker down for the Chicago winter. One of the best and safest ways to do a good Fall/Winter Cleanse is stop in to the Raby Institute for an individualized program that works best for you.
