Dr. DuMont Earns First of Its Kind Integrative Medicine Certification

Robert DuMont, MD, who specializes in Integrative Pediatrics at the Raby Institute, recently became one of the first physicians in the country to earn board certification in Integrative Medicine. His certification comes from one of the main organizations that board certifies doctors in the United States-the American Board of Physician Specialties.

This is the first time in the organization's history that it has certified Integrative Medicine as an independent specialty. Historically, the board has offered certifications in specialties such as Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Dr. DuMont was part of the first wave of specialists to earn Integrative Medicine certification.

"It's a formal validation and recognition of years of study and work," Dr. DuMont says. "Rather than saying, ‘I do Integrative Medicine,' I can now tell people that I'm board certified in Integrative Medicine. It gives credibility to patients, and I think within time, it will show a degree of credibility and expertise to those in the conventional medicine community as well."

He adds, "Knowing your doctor is certified makes you feel more comfortable because you'd know they have had at least a minimum experience and training."

Meeting the Requirements

In order to receive certification, the American Board of Physician Specialties required that Dr. DuMont:

• Graduated from an accredited medical school
• Completed an accredited medical residency program
• Passed written exams
• Verified credentials
• Completed sufficient documented training and experience in integrative medicine subject areas.

Dr. DuMont took his exams on a cold, blustery day in November at Wheaton College, just outside Chicago. When he learned a few years ago that the board would begin offering certification in Integrative Medicine, he says he didn't question whether or not he would apply.

"I did it because Integrative Medicine is what I do," he says. "And like Edison said, it was ‘1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.' I did it because this certification represents all that extra work I did, beyond what I know from conventional medicine."

An Integrative Life

Early is his life, Dr. DuMont taught himself meditation and mind/body techniques. He went on to graduate from the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia in 1988. He then joined the faculty at Columbus Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University in 1994, after completing a pediatric residency and pediatric gastroenterology fellowship.

Going beyond conventional medicine, Dr. DuMont trained in mind/body medicine at the Harvard Mind/Body Institute. He also received formal training in alternative modalities, including medical hypnosis, functional medicine, medical acupuncture with additional training in Korean Hand Acupuncture, and homeopathy.

Dr. DuMont says he greatly values the interaction he has with his patients and their parents. By taking the time to answer questions, explain practices and really listen, he builds healing relationships based on trust and good will.
