Facial AcupunctureAs we age our skin and body more obviously reflects the state of our internal health. Balance and harmony on the inside results in lustrous hair, clear skin and strong nails. A balanced "shen", or spirit, adds brightness to our eyes. If our digestion system is working properly, we feel more satisfied when we eat and our complexion glows.

The opposite is true when our health on the inside is in a state of disharmony. We see dry, wrinkled skin; early graying of hair; and, puffy and dark circles under our eye. Emotionally, we seem frustrated and sleep patterns may be affected. This leads to an overall washed-out look.

People spend thousands of dollars each year on cosmetics or cosmetic procedures to help maintain their youthful appearance and energy. These approaches focus only on the external. They do nothing to address the internal states of stress and disharmony that contribute to the appearance of aging. Fortunately, the Mei Zen approach to cosmetic acupuncture provides a simple, effective, non-surgical option for women and men to rejuvenate their skin, balance their shen and look and feel more youthful and energetic - from the inside out.

The Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture System was developed by Dr. Martha Lucas. Passionate about Chinese medicine, Dr. Lucas believes it to be the "ultimate anti-aging medicine" because it promotes lifelong internal balance and energy flow. Cosmetic acupuncture uses acupuncture techniques to balance our internal life force energy (Qi) and our nourishing Yin aspect (blood), so that they work together effectively to ward off disease and disharmony in the body. Additionally, a shallow needling technique is used to increase the flow of Qi and blood to the face. The result is a more youthful look.

How Does It Work?

The Mei Zen approach begins with a thorough consultation to establish the appropriate point prescription (protocol) for each individual to balance the entire body. This step is important because each person has unique internal disharmonies that manifest differently on the outside. For example, in Chinese medicine, the lungs are associated with the skin. If your lung energy is off, you may see that your skin is dryer or more red than usual, has a rash or even looks withered. Healthy spleen Qi helps to keep skin firm and lifted and plays an important role in digestion. If your spleen Qi is deficient, you may see some sagging in your skin or poor complexion due to improper digestion of food.

After a balancing protocol has been established, the Mei Zen Cosmetic needling protocol takes place. Several small needles are inserted very shallowly into the face. The goal is to place the needle through the epidermis into the dermis. Impacting the dermis layer of skin creates micro-traumas that increase blood flow. Since the body perceives this as injury, it sends fibroblasts, cells that form collagen and elastin, to those sites to heal them. Increased amounts of collagen and elastin support your skin's ability to rebuild and restore itself naturally. This explains why skin tone improves, why your skin is more elastic and supple and why the skin firms and lifts. Balancing out the body's energy at the same time results in longer results and supports overall long term health and vibrancy. Other, more invasive, cosmetic treatments focus on injections of Botox, collagen or synthetic forms of hyaluronic acid. This can be very costly and doesn't promote or recognize your body's own ability to heal and regenerate.

Common Results

Oprah's June 2010 magazine featured an article about Mei Zen acupuncture where results included 'glowing skin and even complexion' after one treatment only. Imagine what you might see after the recommended 10-treatment Mei Zen protocol! Other results individuals might expect to see include:

  • Reduction in fine lines
  • 'Leveling' of deeper lines. Deeper lines may never go away completely but they can 'fill up' and look much softer and less harsh
  • Minimization of the jowls
  • Improvement in acne and rosacea
  • Softer, more vibrant skin
  • Cheeks may get smoother

General Health

  • Reduction in hot flashes or night sweats
  • Brighter looking eyes
  • Reversal of mild depression
  • Alleviation of mild anxiety
  • Improved digestion
  • Increase in energy headaches have gone away
  • Improved sleep

Other Factors

Of course, other factors play a role in how we age gracefully. Taking care of our skin with a daily regimen of cleansing and moisturizing is important. Limiting exposure to the sun and reducing habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also improve general appearance and health. Finally, maintaining habits that promote excellent internal health are very important. Eating a healthy diet to support our body's individual needs, taking Chinese herbals to correct specific imbalances and receiving acupuncture to maintain our unique balance and harmony are all critical to consider.
