Theri Griego Raby, MD, ABHM

Founder & Medical Director, Integrative Internal Medicine & Primary Care

Dr. Theri Raby is an educator, mentor, and a visionary for integrative medical practices in both Chicago and nationwide.

Over the course of her professional and personal development, she has cultivated a deep understanding of the effective blending of Western allopathic medicine with traditional holistic modalities.

Dr. Theri Raby’s journey as an integrative physician began in childhood.  She was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was inspired at an early age by an innate curiosity and encultured training in herbal remedy, prayer, and holistic healing as practiced by the First Nations of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Her work as a community health educator after college deepened her appreciation for holistic approaches and helped her to realize her passion for healing and desire to step into a more central role in the medical field.

Dr. Raby received her training in allopathic medicine at the University of New Mexico, where her studies in cross-cultural medicine introduced her to the ways of medicine men, shamans, and curanderas (healers). Drawn to caring for the whole person, she excelled in her Internal Medicine residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, serving one year as Chief Resident.

While mastering her western medical training at Rush and then at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Dr. Theri Raby became more aware of its limitations in caring for people holistically. Knowing her personal style of practicing medicine would integrate her roots in alternative healing, she advocated for and founded the Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1996. Over the next 12 years, her role as Medical Director enabled Dr.Raby to pioneer the integration of alternative and complementary practices in traditional medical settings.

As a healthcare ‘change agent,’ Dr. Theri Raby continually elevates awareness and understanding of the efficacy of integrative medicine. She promoted the inclusion of Integrative Medicine rotations in Obstetrics and Gynecology residencies, raised funding for research exploring acupuncture and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) at Northwestern, and has advanced legislation to support the licensing of naturopathic doctors in Illinois.

Founding the Raby Institute in 2009, her passion for integrative medicine comes to fruition, with an exceptional healthcare team and setting that incorporates the best of many medical traditions.

Dr. Theri Raby is board-certified in internal medicine and is also certified in integrative medicine through the American Board of Holistic Medicine (ABHM). She is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). In March 2009, Dr. Raby was invited by the founders of IFM, Jeffrey Bland, PhD, and Mark Hyman MD, to participate in a national forum of integrative medicine physicians focused on advocating for the increased role of Functional Medicine in traditional healthcare settings.
